JFCJ - Student Assistance Team

STUDENT ASSISTANCE TEAM

Mission Statement

The Acton Elementary School Student Assistance Team attempts to intervene with youth in grades K-8 experiencing social, emotional, and academic challenges.  The Student Assistance Team process is a screening mechanism for the identification, intervention referral, and follow-up.  It may serve as a pre-referral system to the Special Education process and provides a link between the school and families and with related community agencies.  The team is composed of individuals employed by the school system.  Others may be invited to serve on a case by case basis.

Procedures for referral to the Student Assistance Team (SAT)

Referrals come from many sources: parents, teachers, friends, concerned students, administrators, law enforcement, courts, social workers, school guidance counselors, health care providers, or students themselves.

School employed referents are protected from liability and recrimination by the legal doctrine of in loco parentis for referrals made in good faith.

  1. Concerned person completes Student Assistance Team referral form.

  2. Completed form is placed in a sealed envelope marked CONFIDENTIAL or handed in person to the school counselor.

  3. Referrals are reviewed at the S.A.T. meeting observing strict confidentiality and a case manager is assigned.

  4. The case manager gathers information about the referral.

  5. S.A.T. reviews the collected information at the next meeting and decides whether to accept the case.

  6. S.A.T. develops an action plan.

  7. S.A.T. follows up on the progress of the action plan as needed.
