JGAAA - PreK Program Policy
PRE-K PROGRAM POLICY
The benefits of Pre-K (Pre- Kindergarten) programs are well-documented. Therefore, it is the intent of the Acton School Department to provide Pre-K services to all Acton residents. Since Pre-K programs are not required by State statute, the Acton School Committee may annually need to review any or all aspects of this policy.
It is the desire of the Acton School Committee to treat the Pre-K program like any other grade level. However, given the annual uncertainty of enrollment numbers as well as unforeseen budget restrictions, the Acton School Committee may need to alter or adjust any component of the program in order to maintain services to eligible Acton students and their families.
Structure, Scope and the Scale of the Pre-K Program
Class Size: State statute requires an 8:1 ratio of Pre-K students to adults. Acton School Department will limit Pre-K class sizes to 16 students. In the Pre-K setting, this would consist of 1 teacher and 1 Ed Tech per classroom to maintain the required ratio.
Length of Day. The Acton School Committee’s preference is to provide a full-day curriculum as part of the Pre-K program. However, it may be necessary in any one year to alter the length of the school day for Pre-K students in order to serve all Acton residents as well as meet any budgetary restrictions.
Transportation
The desire of Acton School Committee is to provide transportation to all Pre-K students.
The decision to provide transportation to the Pre-K program will be determined by the Acton School Committee annually by the committee.
In the event that the Acton School Committee decides to offer partial day programs, transportation will only be provided during the normal morning and afternoon school runs. The Acton School Department will not provide transportation to and from school during midday transitions. Such transportation will need to be provided by the students’ families or their approved proxies.
