JGD - Suspension
SUSPENSION
Recognizing its obligation to provide educational opportunities for all school age young people of the Town of Acton, the Acton School Committee believes that the powers of suspension and expulsion should be used as infrequently as is practicable to maintain a safe and educationally sound environment in the Acton School Department.
Students shall be suspended only in accordance with regulations established by the Superintendent/Principal. The Superintendent/Principal/designees , are authorized, subject to regulations established by the Superintendent/Principal , to suspend students for infraction of school rules. Suspensions of more than ten (10) days may be imposed by the school committee.
The Superintendent/Principal may consider the following as infractions of school rules and may authorize the suspension of a student upon being satisfied that a student has engaged in conduct or behavior that constitutes a disregard of school regulation or discipline; or who refuses to obey a proper and lawful instruction or admonition; or who commits an infraction of school regulations or requirements or standards; or when the suspension is for the general health, safety or welfare of the school; or for good order; or where the student's act adversely affects the school's objectives.
Students with disabilities may be removed from their regular school programs as a result of a suspension. When removing students with disabilities from their regular school programs, the District shall comply fully with all applicable state and federal laws governing suspension, expulsion or removal of students with disabilities.
For purposes of this rule, a "suspension" is a complete termination of school services and removal from school grounds for any set period of time up to ten (10) days when ordered by the school for disciplinary reasons. Students shall be responsible for any schoolwork missed during their suspension. The Superintendent/Principal/designee may develop and implement regulations to assist administrators in responding appropriately to misconduct by students with disabilities.
